KNOW YOUR DJ – Zachary Norman

Zach Norman Know Your DJ

The resident Ranga DJ who loves to inject a bit of dirty bass in there when you least expect it!

Name: Zach

Age: 23 and a bit

Where were you born and raised?:

Uuuh, all over the place! Quite a nomadic family. Born in Ipswich and spent the better part of my life on the coastal parts of QLD.

How long have you been Djing?:

I’d say around 4 years now?

Tell us about your first DJ set:

House party! I played a bit of b2b with a few friends beforehand, but this was my first “set”. It was a pretty messy experience, and the DJ beforehand managed to blow his speakers. Thankfully a neighbor volunteered to grab his PA system to keep the music going. I think about 40 minutes into my set the cops showed up and threatened to confiscate my gear. Felt a little rebellious quietly playing NWA’s “Fuck tha police” as they walked out, but I didn’t want my brand new equipment getting taken, so I had to end it there.

What’s your favourite music?:

Such a fan of disco and funk. But there are goodies in every genre of music if you dig deep enough.

You’re in the middle of set, what’s your late night drink choice?:

Hendricks, lime and soda.

What are your ‘flagship’ songs at KB?:

People have been really digging an edit of “Africa” by Toto that I play. Though a personal favorite and a surprise hit on the dance floor is “Midas Touch” by Midnight Star.

Most triumphant moment behind the decks?:

Uuuuh, ive played a fair bit overseas in some questionable clubs, ive seen some crazy shit. I don’t know, maybe having a bunch of pouty Koreans that where sitting in a big group looking lost at the club lose their minds to “Raspberry Beret” by prince and start crowd surfing all over the other people dancing, whether they liked it or not.

Have you got a funny/irritating customer moment?:

Plenty. The funniest in hindsight would probably be the marital dispute and death threats I got from ignoring a drunk husbands wife. Big WTF moment.

When you’re not behind the turntables, where can we find you?:

Work or home studying, weekends – out.

Im one of those guys that fixates on one thing and needs to know everything about it, so I geek out on heaps of things. Though generically…. I guess music, running/gym, tv, games.

If you could do a set with anyone in the world (dead or alive) who would it be?:

Snoop Dogg is Djing now! It would be pretty fun to spin with him I rekon. That or the Gaslamp Killer.

Favourite colour?: chaque couleur

Where would you like to see yourself in 10 years time?:

No idea. I couldn’t even tell you where I would be in 2 years. Hopefully with, you know, some kickass job and a banging wife.

Tell us something random in 50 words or less:

The movie; The Room produced and starred by Tommy Wiseau had a budget of 20 million dollars ($20,000,000!) and had a Box Office of $1,900. Also, superfluids are freaky. FACT.
